The battle lines are drawn! With the election of Donald Trump by a majority of electoral votes even though Hillary Clinton won more popular votes, Democrats have declared war on the Electoral College system of electing our president, and Republicans have leapt to its defense. Democrats want direct popular election of the president, while Republicans want to keep the status quo without change. Fifty States, Not Six argues that there is another way, a better way to elect our president which preserves beneficial features of the Electoral College system while aligning it more closely with both the national popular vote and our modern concepts of citizens’ right to choose their leaders. It also shows how this way is in the partisan political interests of both Republicans and Democrats. If you are an American who: • is curious how we came by our current system of electing the President • is open to considering a proposal to improve that system that accommodates all sides, and • is in favor of every citizen’s vote counting in selecting all of our Nation’s leaders, in Congress as well as the presidency, then this short book may be of interest and use to you. The Electoral College no longer functions as intended by the Framers, yet direct popular election of our president risks tearing apart our diverse and divided Nation. The Popular Electoral Vote Amendment proposed here offers a better way to choose our leaders, and assure that every citizen’s vote counts.

Fifty States, Not Six: A Bipartisan Approach to Reforming the Electoral College and Assuring that Every Citizen’s Vote Counts free ebook

The Electoral Colleges were supposed to be independent deliberative bodies, not pointless rubber stamps where the winner of a mere plurality in a state takes all of that states electoral votesThis has resulted in a significant skewing of political power in favor of areas with large non-citizen immigrant populationsDemocrats would like the presidency to go to whoever wins the popular vote nationally, while Republicans defend the existing constitutional Electoral College systemMy new short book Fifty States, Not Six a bipartisan approach to reforming the Electoral College and assuring that every citizens vote counts proposes a constitutional amendment which attempts to comprehensively address all of these issuesIt also equalizes the votes of all citizens in congressional as well as presidential elections by apportioning based on the citizen populationThis short but comprehensive look at our election system offers fascinating historical insights from the founding to the 2016 election, as well as looking forward to reforming that system so that every citizens vote countsThe book is now available in print for only $5.99 from Amazon and for download for only $2.99 on Kindle or Nook. Moreover, the problems of our election system do not end with the winner-takes-all corruption of the Electoral College systemIn order to implement the three-fifths compromise, where slaves counted as three-fifths of a person for purposes of allocating seats in the House and Electoral College votes, the Constitution bases those allocations on the gross population, not the citizen populationThe Popular Electoral Vote Amendment reforms rather than scraps the Electoral College system, preserving its unifying function while assuring that every citizens vote counts by eliminating winner-takes-all

However, our current status quo is not how the Framers intended the Electoral College system to workThis winner-takes-all system violates the Framers intent and results in presidential elections being decided in a few swing states (the six states of the title above) while the votes of tens of millions of Americans are rendered meaningless because they live in a state dominated by another political partyYet direct popular election is not a good solution, as it risks favoring sectional candidates who would drive our divided and diverse Nation even farther apartDonald Trumps victory in the Electoral Colleges despite Hillary Clinton winning a majority of the popular vote has focused new attention on the Constitutions procedures for electing the PresidentIt also shows how this proposal is in the partisan political interests of both Democrats and Republicans
